Installation
1. Clean mating surface on transmission and extension housing. Verify that the extension has a shoulder cast
in it. See Fig. 19 . Install NEW extension housing gasket and position extension housing on case.
2. Install the extension housing bolts. See Fig. 18 . Ensure parking pawl spring is properly seated in case.
Connect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor.
3. Raise the transmission up. Install the rear transmission mount. Install the bolts and tighten to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Lower the transmission on to the rear crossmember
CAUTION: The extension housing for the 4R100 has a shoulder or a boss cast in it to
hold the orifice lube plug in the back of the case. If the wrong extension
housing is used, the plug may become loose and/or fall out and cause
transmission damage.
CAUTION: Be sure not to raise the back of the transmission too high. If it makes
contact with the underbody, damage to the TSS and OSS sensors will
occur.

support. Install the transmission insulator and nuts.
4. Tighten transmission insulator nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Remove the
transmission jack from the transmission. Install the driveshaft. See appropriate DRIVESHAFTS &
UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES. Lower the vehicle.
5. Fill the transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level and check for correct transaxle operation. See
LUBRICATION .

EXTENSION HOUSING SEAL (4R70W)
Removal
1. Drain the transmission fluid. See DRAINING & REFILLING under LUBRICATION. Mark the
driveshaft flange and the rear companion flange for correct alignment during assembly. See Fig. 16 .
2. Remove the 4 driveshaft bolts. Separate the driveshaft from the transmission. Use a high-lift transmission
jack to support the transmission. Remove the 2 transmission mount nuts. See Fig. 20 .
3. Remove the transmission crossmember bolts. See Fig. 21 . Remove the transmission crossmember.
4. Lower the transmission to access the extension housing seal. Using the Slide Hammer (100-001) and Seal
Remover (307-048), remove the extension housing seal. See Fig. 22 .
