KIA Carens (2018 year). Instruction — part 29

WARNING

Failure to use an approved trailer

wiring harness could result in dam‐

age to the vehicle electrical system

and/or personal injury.

Driving on grades

Rüducü spüüd and shiýt to a lowür þüar

büýorü you start down a lonþ or stüüp

downþradü. Iý you don t shiýt down, you

miþht havü to usü your braküs so much

that thüy would þüt hot and no lonþür

maximum trailür wüiþht without trailür

braküs and you havü an automatic

transaxlü / dual clutch transmission,

æpüratinþ your vühiclü in D (Drivü)

whün towinþ a trailür will minimizü

hüat build up and üxtünd thü liýü oý

your transaxlü.

CAUTION

• When towing a trailer on steep

grades (in excess of 6%) pay close

attention to the engine coolant

temperature gauge to ensure the

engine does not overheat.

If the needle of the coolant tem‐

perature gauge moves across the

dial towards 130/H (HOT) , pull

over and stop as soon as it is safe

to do so, and allow the engine to

idle until it cools down. You may

proceed once the engine has

cooled sufficiently.

• You must decide driving speed de‐

pending on trailer weight and up‐

hill grade to reduce the possibility

of engine and transaxle overheat‐

ing.

CAUTION

n For dual clutch transmission

When towing a trailer on steep

grades, the clutch in the transmis‐

sion could overheat.
(Continued)

(Continued)

When the clutch is overheated, the

safe protection mode engages. If the

safe protection mode engages, the

gear position indicator on the cluster

blinks with a chime sound.

At this time, a warning message will

appear on the LCD display and driv‐

ing may not be smooth.

If you ignore this warning, the driv‐

ing condition may become worse.

To return the normal driving condi‐

tion, stop the vehicle on flat road

and apply the foot brake for a few

minutes before driving off.

Parking on hills

Günürally, iý you havü a trailür attachüd

to your vühiclü, you should not park

your vühiclü on a hill. çüoplü can bü sü‐

WARNING

n Parking brake

It can be dangerous to get out of

CAUTION

• Due to higher load during trailer

usage, overheating might occur in

hot days or during uphill driving. If

the coolant gauge indicates over‐

heating, switch off the air condi‐

tioner and stop the vehicle in a

safe area to cool down the engine.

• When towing check transaxle fluid

more frequently.

• If your vehicle is not equipped with

an air conditioner, you should in‐

stall a condenser fan to improve

engine performance when towing

a trailer.

If you do decide to pull a trailer

Hürü arü somü important points iý you

dücidü to pull a trailür:

• Considür usinþ a sway control. ðou

can ask a hitch düalür about sway

control.

• Do not do any towinþ with your car

(60 mph)).

• æn a lonþ uphill þradü, do not üxcüüd

n Vehicle weight

The gross axle weight rating (GAWR)

and the gross vehicle weight rating

(GVWR) for your vehicle are on the

certification label attached to the

driver's (or front passenger’s) door.

Exceeding these ratings can cause

an accident or vehicle damage. You

can calculate the weight of your load

by weighing the items (and people)

before putting them in the vehicle.

ommünd that you havü a compütünt

tüchnician or towinþ sürvicü jump start

your vühiclü.

CAUTION

Use only a 12-volt jumper system.

You can damage a 12-volt starting

motor, ignition system, and other

electrical parts beyond repair by use

of a 24-volt power supply (either

two 12-volt batteries in series or a

24-volt motor generator set).

WARNING

n Battery

Never attempt to check the electro‐

lyte level of the battery as this may

cause the battery to rupture or ex‐

plode causing serious injury.

WARNING

n Battery

(Continued)

• Keep all flames or sparks away

from the battery. The battery

produces hydrogen gas which may

explode if exposed to flame or

sparks.

If these instructions are not fol‐

lowed exactly, serious personal in‐

jury and damage to the vehicle

may occur! If you are not sure how

to follow this procedure, seek

qualified assistance. Automobile

batteries contain sulfuric acid. This

is poisonous and highly corrosive.

When jump starting, wear protec‐

tive glasses and be careful not to

get acid on yourself, your clothing

or on the vehicle.

• Do not attempt to jump start the

vehicle if the discharged battery is

frozen or if the electrolyte level is

low; the battery may rupture or

explode.

• Do not allow the (+) and (-) jumper

cables to touch. It may cause

sparks.

• The battery may rupture or ex‐

plode when you jump start with a

low or frozen battery.

CAUTION

n AGM battery (if equipped)

• Absorbent Glass Matt (AGM) bat‐

teries are maintenance free and

have the AGM battery serviced by

a professional workshop. Kia rec‐

ommends to visit an authorized

Kia dealer/service partner. For

charging your AGM battery, use

only fully automatic battery

chargers that are specially devel‐

oped for AGM batteries.

• When replacing the AGM battery,

use parts for replacement from a

professional workshop. Kia recom‐

mends to visit an authorized Kia

dealer/service partner.

• Do not open or remove the cap on

top of the battery. This may cause

leaks of internal electrolyte that

could result in severe injury.

(Continued)

(Continued)

• If the AGM battery is reconnected

or replaced, ISG function will not

operate immediately.

If you want to use the ISG func‐

tion, the battery sensor needs to

be calibrated for approximately

4 hours with the ignition off.

Serious loss of coolant indicates

there is a leak in the cooling sys‐

tem. In this case, have the sys‐

workshop. Kia recommends to

visit an authorized Kia dealer/

service partner.

When the engine overheats from

low engine coolant, suddenly

adding engine coolant may cause

cracks in the engine. To prevent

damage, add engine coolant

slowly in small quantities.
