Center seat belt/Center seat belt buckle ('98 - 01 models):
1. Remove:
• Rear seat cushion and rear seat-back (see
CENTER SEAT BELT
Lower/center anchor bolt construction:

NOTE:
• Check that the retractor locking mechanism func-
• Before installing the anchor bolt, make sure
there are no twists or kinks in the rear center seat
belt.
3. Remove the center seat belt anchor bolt, then
remove the center seat belt buckle.

Seat Belts
Inspection
SRS components are located in this area. Review the
SRS component locations, precautions, and procedures
in this (
) before preforming repairs or service.
To avoid accidental deployment and possi-
ble injury, always disconnect the seat belt tensioner con-
nector before removing the retractor (see page
).
Retractor Inspection
1. Before installing the retractor, check that the seat belt
can be pulled out freely.
2. Make sure that the seat belt does not lock when the
retractor is leaned slowly up to 15° from the mounted
position. The seat belt should lock when the retractor
is leaned over 40°.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to disassemble the retrac-
tor.

3. Replace the seat belt with a new assembly if there is
any abnormality. Do not disassemble any part of
the seat belt for any reason.

On-the Car Seat Belt Inspection
1. Check that the seat belt is not twisted or caught on
anything.
2. After installing the anchors, check for free move-
ment on the anchor bolts. If necessary, remove the
anchor bolts and check that the washers and other
parts are not damaged or improperly installed.
3. Check the seat belts for damage or discoloration.
Clean with a shop towel if necessary.
CAUTION: Use only soap and water to clean.
NOTE: Dirt build-up in the metal loops of the upper
anchors can cause the seat belts to retract slowly.
Wipe the inside of the loops with a clean cloth damp-
ened in isopropyl alcohol.
4. Check that the seat belt does not lock when pulled
out slowly. The seat belt is designed to lock only
during a sudden stop or impact.
5. Make sure that the seat belt will retract automatically
when released.
6. For each passenger's seat belt, make sure that the
locking mechanism in the seat belt retractor will
engage when the seat belt is pulled all the way out.
7. Replace the seat belt with a new assembly if there is
any abnormality. Do not disassemble any part of
the seat belt for any reason.

Child Seat Tether Anchor
Installation — '96 - 99 Models
Attachment points are provided for a rear-seat-mounted
child restraint system that uses a top tether. The attach-
ment points are located the rear shelf, just behind the rear
seat-back. When using a child seat with a top tether,
install the child seat tether anchors securely.
NOTE:
• Remove the plug covers from the attachment points
of the rear shelf (Canada).
• Use a razor blade or sharp knife to carefully cut a 22
mm (7/8 in.) diameter circle at the location of the
attachment point (USA).

NOTE:
• Do not remove the toothed washer from the child seat
tether anchor. Use the anchor with the toothed washer
attached to it.
• When installing a child seat on the rear seat, follow
the instructions of the manufacturer of the child seat.
• Additional tether anchors are available.
Do not use the child seat tether anchor for
any other purpose; it is designed exclusively for installa-
tion of a child seat.
