Acura RL (1996-2004 year). Manual — part 438
Disassembly/Reassembly
NOTE:
• Clean all parts thoroughly in solvent or carburetor cleaner, and dry with compressed air.
• Blow out all passages.
• Do not let the check balls fall out of the main valve body when removing the main valve body.
• Coat all parts with ATP before reassembly.
• Replace the O-rings and filters.
• Install the filters in the direction shown.
• Refer to page
when installing the check balls on the main valve body.
CAUTION: Do not use a magnet to remove the check balls; it may magnetize the balls.

Throttle Valve Body/A/T Clutch Pressure Control
Solenoid Valve
Test
1. Connect the No. 4 (RED: +) terminal of the shift
solenoid valve/A/T clutch pressure control solenoid
valve harness connector to the battery positive ter-
minal and the No. 3 (WHT: -) terminal to the battery
negative terminal. Check that the throttle valve
moves.

Throttle valve moves in this
direction while connecting the
battery.
NOTE: Do not adjust or remove;
this is adjusted at the factory.
2. Disconnect the battery terminals, and check that the
throttle valve releases.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2.
NOTE: You can see throttle valve movement
through the fluid passage in the attaching surface of
the throttle valve body.
4. If the throttle valve binds, or moves sluggishly, or if
the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve does
not operate, replace the throttle valve body/A/T
clutch pressure control solenoid valve assembly.
5. If the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve
does not operate, disconnect the A/T clutch pres-
sure control solenoid valve harness from the A/T
clutch pressure control solenoid valve. Connect the
battery terminals directly to the A/T clutch pressure
control solenoid valve.
6. If the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve
operates after connecting the battery, and the throt-
tle valve movement is OK, replace the shift solenoid
valves A and B.
NOTE: Throttle valve body/A/T clutch pressure control
solenoid valve must be replaced as an assembly.
1. Check the throttle valve body passages for dust or
dirt, and replace as an assembly, if necessary.
2. Clean the mounting surface and fluid passages of
the throttle valve body.
3. Install the throttle valve body/A/T clutch pressure
control solenoid valve onto the secondary valve
body, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

Replacement
Measure the resistance between the No. 2 terminal
of the shift solenoid valve/A/T clutch pressure con-
trol solenoid valve harness connector and body
ground, and between the No. 1 terminal and body
ground.

2. Replace the shift solenoid valves A and B if the
resistance is out of specification.
3. If the resistance is within the standard, connect the
No. 2 terminal of the shift solenoid valve/A/T clutch
pressure control solenoid valve harness connector
to the battery positive terminal. A clicking sound
should be heard. Connect the No. 1 terminal to the
battery positive terminal. A clicking sound should be
heard. Replace the shift solenoid valves A and B if
no clicking sound is heard.

CAUTION: Use fender covers to avoid damaging paint-
ed surfaces.
NOTE: The PCM memory must be reset after reconnecting
the battery or the BACK UP, RADIO fuse (see page
).
1. Before you disconnect power, make sure you have
the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down
the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
2. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal from
the battery, then remove the positive (+) terminal.
3. Shift the transmission into the position.
