ADJUSTMENTS

SHIFT CABLE

1. Remove the center console cover. See CENTER CONSOLE under REMOVAL AND

INSTALLATION.

2. Shift the transaxle into "R" position.

3. Remove the nut securing the shift cable end. See Fig. 8 .

4. Press the holder lock release (A), and pull out the socket holder (B) to remove the shift cable (C) from the

shift lever bracket base (D). Do not remove the shift cable by pulling the shift cable guide (E). See Fig.
9
.

Push the shift cable until it stops. Release it. See Fig. 10 . Pull the shift cable back one step so that the
shift cable is in "R" position.

6. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and verify that the "R" position indicator illuminates.

7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

8. Ensure shift lever is in "R" position. Insert a .24" (6.0 mm) pin (A) through the positioning hole (B) on

the shift lever bracket base and into the positioning hole (C) on the shift lever. See Fig. 11 . The shift
lever is secured in the "R" position.

9. Align the socket holder (A) on the shift cable (B) with the slot in the bracket base (C). Slide the holder

into base. Install the shift cable end (D) over the mounting stud (E) by aligning its square hole (F) with
the square fitting (G) at the bottom of the stud. See Fig. 12 . Push the holder until it snaps securely in
place. Do not install the shift cable by twisting the shift cable guide (H).

10. Verify that the shift cable end (A) is properly installed on the mounting stud (B). See Fig. 13 .

NOTE:

Various components may be serviced without transaxle removal. For servicing
of these components, see appropriate components under ADJUSTMENTS
and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing
electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.

WARNING:

Vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). When
servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR
system-related components are located in various locations throughout
interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. DO NOT use
electrical test equipment on these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR
system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG
DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

CAUTION: DO NOT hold the shift cable guide (A) to adjust the shift cable (B).

NOTE:

DO NOT install the shift cable end on the mounting stud while the shift

If improperly installed, remove the shift cable from the shift lever bracket base, and reinstall the shift
cable.

12. Install and tighten the shift cable end nut to the specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . See

Fig. 8 .

13. Remove the .24" (6.0 mm) pin (A) that was installed to hold the shift lever. See Fig. 11 .

14. Move the shift lever to each position, and verify that the A/T gear position indicator matches the A/T

range switch.

15. Push the shift lock release, and verify that the shift lever releases. Reinstall the center console. See

CENTER CONSOLE under REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION.
