3.6 REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RING
Removing the wheel speed sensor ring
1.
Remove the wheel speed sensor.
2.
Remove the wheel hub unit from the axle
journal.
3.
Make a notch in the side of the sensor ring,
using a hammer and chisel. Make sure that
the contact surface of the sensor ring to the
wheel hub unit is not damaged in the
process.
4.
Remove the wheel hub unit sensor ring.
Once removed, a sensor ring should
not be re-installed.
Installation of wheel speed sensor ring
1.
Check the contact surface of the sensor ring
to the wheel hub unit for damage.
2.
Check the new sensor ring carefully for
possible damage in transit.
3.
Fit a new sensor ring to the wheel hub unit
using a press and flat plate.
4.
Check that the sensor ring makes good
contact around the entire circumference.
5.
Install the wheel hub unit on the axle journal.
6.
Press the wheel speed sensor (2) against
the sensor ring (1) by hand. While the vehicle
is being driven, the air gap between the
sensor and the sensor ring is adjusted.
If the sensor has no freedom of movement,
remove, clean and refit it.
Never tap the sensor with a hammer.
This may damage both the sensor
and the sensor ring.
7.
Check the operation of the EBS or ABS
system.

3.8 REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, FRONT AXLE SWIVEL AXLE
Removing the front axle swivel axle
1.
Remove the wheel hub unit.
2.
Remove the track rod and, if necessary, the
swivel axle steering rod.
3.
Remove the cover (2).
4.
Remove the sealing plate (9).
5.
Remove the nut (3).
6.
Screw the hydraulic puller (B), special tool
(DAF no. 0535891), into the king pin
puller (C), special tool (DAF no. 0694767)
for axles 150N, 152N and 156N or
(DAF no. 1453127) for axles 182N and
186N.
7.
Install the centring plate (E), special tool
(DAF no. 0694823) for axles 150N, 152N
and 156N or (DAF no. 1453134) 1453128 for
axles 182N and 186N, on the bottom plate of
the king pin puller.
8.
Position the appropriate pivot (D) for the axle
type, special tool (DAF no. 0694919) for
150N, 152N and 156N or (DAF no. 0694920)
for the 182N and 186N axles to the king pin.
9.
Fit the king pin puller to the king pin.
10. Align the king pin puller at the top of the
pivot (D). At the bottom, the centring pins of
the centring plate (E) should fall into the
swivel axle bolt holes.
11. Screw out the spindle (A) of the hydraulic
puller (B) as far as possible.
12. Use a spanner to screw the hydraulic

13. Screw the spindle (A) in until the king pin (8)
is released. If the king pin (8) is not released
after the spindle (A) is fully screwed in, the
spindle (A) should be fully unscrewed and
the hydraulic puller (B) screwed in further
into the king pin puller (C). Then screw the
spindle (A) back in.
Note:
If the king pin (8) is not released, it may be
"knocked out". Tap with a hammer on the
axle end stop which is not used.
14. Remove the king pin (8) from the swivel
axle (6). Make sure that no needles fall from
the needle bearings.
15. Remove the bearing bush (4) from the swivel
axle. Make sure that no needles fall from the
needle bearings.
16. Remove the swivel axle (6) from the axle
end. Ensure that the adjusting ring (7) does
not get lost.
Installation of front axle swivel axle
After a collision or when the camber angle is
incorrect, the swivel axle should be magnaflux
tested. If in doubt, always replace the swivel axle.
1.
Check the condition of the needle bearings.
2.
Check the bearing surfaces of the king
pin (8) and the bearing bush (4) for grooves
(see the arrows). A small needle puncture
may be polished away using fine polishing
paper. If in doubt, always replace the king
pin (8) and the bearing bush (4).
3.
Check the thrust bearing for wear.
4.
Check the adjusting ring (7) for damage. If
required, replace the adjusting ring (7).
5.
Check the contact surfaces of the swivel axle
adjusting ring (7) and the axle end for
damage.
6.
Fit the swivel axle (6) with a adjusting ring (7)
of the same thickness as the original to the
axle end.
