ON-VEHICLE SERVICE

FRONT AXLE TOTAL BACKLASH CHECK
<4WD>

M1261001300151

1. If the vehicle vibrates and produces a booming

sound due to an imbalance in the drive system,
measure the front axle total backlash by the
following procedure to see if the differential carrier
assembly requires removal.
(1) Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface.
(2) Move the transmission control lever to the

neutral position or the selector lever to the "N"
position. Then place the transfer shift lever to
the "2H" position. Apply the parking brake.
Raise the vehicle on a jack.

Mating marks

AC

(3) Turn the companion flange clockwise as far as

it will go. Make the mating mark on the dust
cover of the companion flange and on the
differential carrier.

ACX00964 AB

(4) Turn the companion flange anti-clockwise as

far as it will go, and measure the amount of
distance the mating marks moved.

Limit: 11 mm

2. If the backlash exceeds the limit, remove the

differential carrier assembly and final drive gear.
Then check the differential gear meshing
condition and the looseness of the driveshaft or
inner shaft splines.

FRONT AXLE GEAR OIL LEVEL CHECK
<4WD>

M1262000900238

1. Remove the under cover and filler plug.

2. Check that gear oil level is not 8 mm below the

bottom of filler plug hole.

3. If the gear oil level is lower than the lower limit,

add the specified gear oil until the level comes to
the lower portion of the filler plug hole.

Specified gear oil:
Gear oil API classification GL-5 or higher
SAE 80W

4. Tighten the filler plug to the specified torque

(Refer to

P.26-43

).

GEAR OIL REPLACEMENT <4WD>

M1262005100196

1. Remove the under cover and filler plug.
2. Remove the drain plug and drain oil.
3. Tighten the drain plug to the specified torque

(Refer to

P.26-43

).

4. Add the oil until the level comes to the lower

portion of the filler plug hole.

Specified gear oil:

Gear oil API classification GL-5 or higher SAE

80W

Amount to use: 1.2L

5. Tighten the filler plug to the specified torque

(Refer to

P.26-43

).

WHEEL BEARING AXIAL PLAY CHECK

M1261001100544

1. Remove the caliper assembly and brake disc, and

retain the caliper assembly with a wire and the like
to prevent from falling (Refer to

P.26-14

,

P.26-16

).

AC602402AB

ON-VEHICLE SERVICE

FRONT AXLE

26-12

2. Attach a dial gauge as shown in the illustration,

and then measure the axial play while moving the
hub in the axial direction.

Limit: 0 mm

3. If axial play exceeds the limit, disassemble the

front hub assembly and check the parts.

4. After checking, install the brake disc and the

caliper assembly (Refer to

P.26-14

,

P.26-16

).

HUB BOLT REPLACEMENT

M1261001000718

1. Remove the caliper assembly and brake disc, and

FREE WHEEL SOLENOID VALVE
OPERATION CHECK <4WD: VEHICLES
FOR EUROPE (EXCEPT FOR RUSSIA)>

M1261001500155

1. Remove the vacuum hoses (blue stripe, yellow

stripe) from the solenoid valves.

2. Disconnect the harness connectors.

Solenoid valve A

Vacuum tank

Intake manifold

3. Connect a hand vacuum pump to solenoid valve

A and carry out the following inspections.
(1) Even if the hand pump is operated with no

other operation, no negative pressure
develops.

(2) Negative pressure does not develop when

battery voltage is applied to solenoid valve A.
Meanwhile, negative pressure is maintained
when the vacuum hose of solenoid valve B is
blocked by bending.

(3) When battery voltage is applied to solenoid

valves A and B, negative pressure is
maintained.
