SPECIAL TOOLS

EXTENSION HOUSING SEAL

REMOVAL

(1) Remove belly pan.
(2) Remove propeller shaft.
(3) Remove seal with Remover C-3985-B (Fig. 115).
(4) Clean and inspect extension housing where the

seal was located.

INSTALLATION

(1) Install seal into place with Installer 8889.
(2) Install propeller shaft.

CAUTION: The drive shaft strap bolts use a Loctite
patch, the bolts must be replaced or cleaned and
Loctite

T

242 applied.

CAUTION: Replace drive shaft joint straps when-
ever they are removed. The straps slightly deform
when torqued in place. Reuse of the straps may
result in reduced clamp load on the universal joint
cap.

(3) Check transmission fluid level.
(4) Install belly pan.

INPUT SHAFT

REMOVAL

NOTE: If input shaft is damaged behind the seal,
the

transmission

must

be

disassembled

and

inspected.

(1) Remove transmission from the vehicle.
(2) Measure output shaft end play and record

number.

(3) Remove clutch slave cylinder from transmission

adapter plate.

(4) Remove front adapter plate bolts (Fig. 116).
(5) Pry front cover adapter loose.
(6) Hold input shaft while removing adapter (Fig.

117).

(7) Remove seal from transmission adapter.

(8) Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces for wear

or damage.

EXTENSION HOUSING SEAL (Continued)

(9) Lift cluster shaft slightly and remove input

shaft from transmission (Fig. 118).

(10) Remove input shaft bearing (Fig. 119) with

Splitter P-334 and a press.

INSTALLATION

(1) Install new seal from the fluid side with

Installer 9366.

(2) Install input shaft bearing on shaft with

Installer 6052 and Installer MB-991317 (Fig. 120).

(3) Install new bearing cup in front adapter withl

original shim behind cup.

(4) Clean sealing surfaces of the transmission case

and adapter plate.

(5) Install new input shaft and adapter plate

(without any Mopar Gasket Maker).

(6) Check output shaft end play. It should be the

same as measured during the disassemble procedure.
If end play is greater than original reading, install a
thicker shim. If end play is less than original read-
ing, install a thinner shim.

(7) After the correct shim has been installed,

remove the adapter plate and apply Mopar Gasket
Maker to the sealing surfaces.

(8) Install adapter and tighten adapter bolts to 34

N·m (25 ft. lbs.).

(9) Install transmission.

REVERSE LOCKOUT
SOLENOID

DESCRIPTION

The reverse lockout solenoid prevents the operator

from shifting into reverse when the vehicle speed is
greater than 3 mph. The solenoid is threaded into
the left side of the transmission.

OPERATION

When vehicle speed is less than 3 mph, the PCM

provides a ground for the solenoid (energized) and
allows shifting. When vehicle speed is greater than 3
mph, the solenoid is deactivated and prevents the
transmission from being shifted into reverse.

SHIFT MECHANISM

REMOVAL

NOTE: The gear shift lever bolts directly to the
transmission. There is no external shift linkage to
disconnect or adjust.

(1) Remove console assembly from vehicle.
(2) Remove four cover mounting bolts (Fig. 121).

(3) Lift cover off of transmission.

INSTALLATION

(1) Clean sealing surfaces of transmission. Then

apply a bead of Mopar Gasket Maker.

(2) Install shifter onto transmission. Make sure

that the ball on the bottom of the shifter is in the off-
set lever.

(3) Install cover mounting bolts and tighten to 18

N·m (156 in. lbs.)

(4) Shift the vehicle to ensure that the shifter

operates correctly.

(5) Reinstall shift console.

SKIP SHIFT SOLENOID

DESCRIPTION

The skip shift solenoid is located on the drivers

side of the transmission case. The skip shift solenoid
prevents the operator from shifting into second or
third gear during certain conditions.

OPERATION

The PCM controls the skip shift solenoid. The PCM

locks out second and third gear when all of the fol-
lowing conditions are met:

• Engine coolant exceeds 41°C (106°F)

• Vehicle speed is between 12 and 20 MPH

• Engine operating above 1322 RPM

• The PCM verified first gear speed/RPM

• Throttle position sensor (TPS) signal is less than

0.68 volt above closed throttle (23 percent throttle
opening)

The solenoid resets when vehicle speed drops below

3 MPH.
