(29) Install reverse gear snap ring on countershaft.
(30) Install reverse synchronizer snap ring (Fig.
102).
(31) Install new reverse shift fork snap ring with
the flat side facing rearward (Fig. 103).
(32) Install reverse gear, bearing, wave washer
and brass synchronizer ring (Fig. 104).
(33) Install reverse gear thrust washer and snap
ring (Fig. 105).

(34) Install main shaft roller bearing, spacers and
snap ring (Fig. 106).
(35) Apply Mopar
t Gasket Maker to tail housing
sealing surface.
(36) Install the six tail housing to case bolts (Fig.
107) and tighten bolts to 41 N·m (30 ft. lbs.).
(37) Install two tail housing nuts on top of trans-
mission tail housing (Fig. 108).
(38) Slide offset lever onto shaft (Fig. 109).

(39) Install offset lever roll pin (Fig. 110).
(40) Install Mopar
t Gasket Maker to the shift
cover sealing surface and position cover on the trans-
mission.
(41) Install shift cover four mounting bolts and
tighten to 18 N·m (13 ft. lbs.).
INSTALLATION
(1) Slide transmission back into the clutch and
seat against the bell housing.
(2) Install transmission bolts (Fig. 111) and tighten
bolts to:
• Transmission to top of engine - 41 N·m (30 ft.
lbs.)
• 7/16 Transmission bolts - 68 N·m (50 ft. lbs.)
• Transmission to oil pan - 23 N·m (200 in. lbs.)
(3) Connect the transmission harness connector.
(4) Install the isolator/shifter handle to the shifter
tower with a crow-foot wrench.
(5) Install transmission crossmember and mount
bolts/nuts. Tighten nuts to 61 N·m (45 ft. lbs.).
(6) Remove transmission support.
(7) Install hydraulic clutch quick connector to the
transmission bell housing.
(8) Install propeller shaft.
CAUTION: The drive shaft strap bolts must be
replaced or cleaned and Loctite
T
242 applied.
CAUTION: Replace drive shaft joint straps when-
ever they are removed. The straps slightly deform
when torqued in place. Reuse of the straps may
result in reduced clamp load on the universal joint
cap.
(9) Install belly pan.
(10) Lower the vehicle.
(11) Connect battery power source.

MAINSHAFT BEARINGS PRELOAD
(1) Install input shaft in to front adapter (Fig.
112).
(2) Install mainshaft and bearing.

(3) Install case and bolt together using all bolts.
(4) Rotate input shaft and mainshaft to seat bear-
ings.
(5) Screw Stud 8161 into the case and set up dial
indicator on the end of the mainshaft (Fig. 113).
(6) Zero the dial indicator, then push up on the
input shaft and record the end play reading. If there
is no end play, a thinner shim must be installed
behind the input shaft bearing cup in the front
adapter. Install .010 in. thinner shims until an end
play is obtained.
(7) Once an end play reading is obtained, add .002
in. to the reading.
(8) Install shim(s) behind the input shaft bearing
cup in the front adapter.
COUNTERSHAFT BEARINGS PRELOAD
(1) Install countershaft with original shim into
adapter.
(2) Install case and bolt together using all bolts.
(3) Rotate countershaft to seat bearings.
(4) Screw Stud 8161 into the case and set up dial
indicator on the countershaft (Fig. 114).
(5) Zero dial indicator and record end play. If there
is no end play, install .010 in. thinner shim until an
end play is obtained.
(6) Once an end play reading is obtained, add end
play number to the shims in the transmission.
(7) Install shim(s) behind the countershaft bearing
cup in the front adapter.
