INSTALLATION
(1) Install gearshift knob and tighten set screw to
2 N·m (17 in. lbs.) torque (Fig. 227).
GEARSHIFT MECHANISM
REMOVAL
(1) Loosen set screw and remove knob from shifter
handle (Fig. 228).
(2) Remove the center console assembly as shown
in (Fig. 229).
(3) Remove shifter bezel (Fig. 230).
(4) Disconnect BTSI cable from mechanism (Fig.
231).

(5) Disconnect shift cable from shifter mechanism
as shown in (Fig. 232).
(6) Remove four (4) shift mechanism-to-floor pan
nuts. Remove shift mechanism.
INSTALLATION
(1) Install shift mechanism into position. Install
mechanism-to-floor pan nuts and torque to 12 N·m
(105 in. lbs.).
(2) Install gearshift cable to shift mechanism (Fig.
232).
(3) Adjust gearshift cable. (Refer to 21 - TRANS-
MISSION/TRANSAXLE/AUTOMATIC - 40TE/GEAR
SHIFT CABLE - ADJUSTMENTS)
(4) Connect shift bezel lamp socket. Install shift
bezel and torque screws to 2 N·m (17 in. lbs.) (Fig.
230).
(5) Install and secure BTSI cable to shift mecha-
nism (Fig. 231).
(6) Adjust BTSI cable. (Refer to 21 - TRANSMIS-
SION/TRANSAXLE/AUTOMATIC

(7) Install center console assembly (Fig. 229).
(8) Install gear shift knob. Torque set screw to 2
N·m (17 in. lbs.).
HOLDING CLUTCHES
DESCRIPTION
Two hydraulically applied multi-disc clutches are
used to hold planetary geartrain components station-
ary while the input clutches drive others. The 2/4
and Low/Reverse clutches are considered holding
clutches and are contained at the rear of the trans-
axle case. (Fig. 233).
OPERATION
NOTE: Refer to the “Elements In Use” chart in Diag-
nosis and Testing for a collective view of which
clutch elements are applied at each position of the
selector lever.
2/4 CLUTCH
The 2/4 clutch is hydraulically applied in second
and fourth gears by pressurized fluid against the 2/4
clutch piston. When the 2/4 clutch is applied, the
front sun gear assembly is held or grounded to the
transaxle case.
LOW/REVERSE CLUTCH
The Low/Reverse clutch is hydraulically applied in
park, reverse, neutral, and first gears by pressurized
fluid against the Low/Reverse clutch piston. When
the Low/Reverse clutch is applied, the front planet
carrier/rear annulus assembly is held or grounded to
the transaxle case.

INPUT CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
DISASSEMBLY
(1) Mount input clutch assembly to Input Clutch
Pressure Fixture (Tool 8391).
(2) Tap down reverse clutch reaction plate to
release pressure from snap ring (Fig. 234).
(3) Remove reverse clutch snap ring (Fig. 235).
(4) Pry up and remove reverse clutch reaction
plate (Fig. 236).

(5) Remove reverse clutch pack (Fig. 237). Tag
components for assembly identification.
