Chrysler PT Cruiser. Manual — part 281
Symptom:
P1653-PCI BUS SHORTED TO GROUND
When Monitored and Set Condition:
P1653-PCI BUS SHORTED TO GROUND
When Monitored:
With the ignition on.
Set Condition:
If the PCM detects a short to ground on the PCI Bus for more than 5
seconds, it will set this DTC.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
INTERMITTENT CONDITION
INTERNAL CONTROLLER SHORT TO GD
PCI BUS SHORT TO GROUND
TEST
ACTION
APPLICABILITY
1
Turn the ignition off.
Measure the resistance between Ground and the PCI Bus circuit at the Data Link
Connector.
Is the resistance below 100 ohms?
All
Yes
→ Go To 2
No
→ Go To 3
2
Turn the ignition off.
Monitor the short to ground on the PCI Bus circuit at the DLC.
NOTE: A wide range of fluctuation in the resistance value may indicate BUS activity.
It may be necessary to wait for all modules to sleep (stop communicating) in order to
get an accurate reading.
Disconnect the Airbag controller, Cluster, RKE, SKIM, Radio, Side Air Bag Module,
and the PCM, one at a time, disconnecting the PCM last.
NOTE: If the resistance never changes with all of the controllers disconnected, there
is a short to ground in the harness.
Does the resistance change from below 100 ohms to above 100 ohms when discon-
necting any module?
All
Yes
→ Replace and reprogram the specific Control Module that is
causing the short to ground in accordance with the Service
Information.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-1 - 1.6L.
No
→ Repair the short to ground in the PCI Bus circuit.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-1 - 1.6L.

NOTE: The conditions that set the DTC are not present at this time. The
following list may help in identifying the intermittent condition.
WARNING: WHEN THE ENGINE IS OPERATING, DO NOT STAND IN A
DIRECT LINE WITH THE FAN. DO NOT PUT YOUR HANDS NEAR THE
PULLEYS, BELTS OR FAN. DO NOT WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING.
With the engine running at normal operating temperature, monitor the DRBIII
t
parameters related to the DTC while wiggling the wiring harness. Look for param-
eter values to change and/or a DTC to set.
Review the DRBIII
t Freeze Frame information. If possible, try to duplicate the
conditions under which the DTC was set.
Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that may apply.
Visually inspect the related wiring harness. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or
partially broken wires.
Visually inspect the related wiring harness connectors. Look for broken, bent, pushed
out, or corroded terminals.
Were any of the above conditions present?
All
Yes
→ Repair as necessary
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-1 - 1.6L.
No
→ Test Complete.

Symptom:
P1654-PCI BUS SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
When Monitored and Set Condition:
P1654-PCI BUS SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
When Monitored:
With the ignition on.
Set Condition:
If the PCM detects a short to voltage on the PCI Bus for more than 5
seconds, it will set this DTC.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
INTERMITTENT CONDITION
INTERNAL CONTROLLER SHORT TO B+
PCI BUS SHORT TO VOLTAGE
TEST
ACTION
APPLICABILITY
1
Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
Measure the voltage on the PCI Bus circuit at the Data Link Connector.
Is the voltage above 8 volts?
All
Yes
→ Go To 2
No
→ Go To 3
2
Turn the ignition on engine not running.
Monitor the voltage on the PCI Bus circuit at the DLC.
Disconnect Airbag controller, Cluster, RKE, SKIM, Radio, and the Side Air Bag
Module, 1 at a time.
If the voltage drops when disconnecting a specific component, replace that component
for an internal short.
Does the voltage stay above 7.5 volts with all the controllers disconnected?
All
Yes
→ Repair the short to voltage in the PCI Bus circuit.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-1 - 1.6L.
No
→ Replace and reprogram the specific Control Module that is caus-
ing the short to voltage in accordance with the Service Informa-
tion.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-1 - 1.6L.
