WARNING
133)
Never smoke while working in the engine compartment: gas and inflammable vapours may be present, with the risk of fire.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE
164
IMPORTANT
46)
When topping up, take care not to mix up the various types of fluids: they are not compatible with each other and could seriously damage
the vehicle.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
165
ENGINE OIL
Check the oil level a few minutes after
stopping the engine (about 5 minutes)
with the vehicle parked on level ground.
The oil level must be between the MIN
and MAX marks on the dipstick (B)
fig. 204 - fig. 205 - fig. 206 - fig. 207 -
fig. 208 - fig. 209 - fig. 210 - fig. 211 -
fig. 212.
The range between the MIN and MAX
marks corresponds to about 1 litre of
oil.
If the oil level is near or even under
the MIN mark, add oil using the filler
(A)fig. 204 - fig. 205 - fig. 206 - fig. 207
- fig. 208fig. 209 - fig. 210 - fig. 211 -
fig. 212to reach the MAX mark.
The oil level must never exceed the
MAX mark.
Engine oil consumption
The maximum engine oil consumption
is usually 400 grams every 1000 km.
The engine needs to run in when
the vehicle is new, and therefore the
engine oil consumption can only be
considered stabilised after the first
5,000 - 6,000 km.
WARNING The oil consumption
depends on driving style and the
conditions under which the vehicle is
used.
WARNING After adding or changing
the oil, let the engine turn over for a few
seconds and wait a few minutes after
turning it off before you check the level.
134)
47)
4)
ENGINE COOLANT
The coolant level must be checked
when the engine is cold and must
range between the MIN and MAX
marks on the reservoir. If the level
is too low, slowly pour through the
filler (C) fig. 204 - fig. 205 - fig. 206 -
fig. 207 - fig. 208 - fig. 209 - fig. 210
- fig. 211 - fig. 212 of the reservoir a
mixture of 50% demineralised water
and 50% PETRONAS LUBRICANTS
PARAFLU UP until the level is close to
MAX.
The mixture of 50% demineralised
water and 50% PARAFLU UP protects
against freezing down to -35°C.
When the vehicle is used in particularly
harsh weather conditions, we
recommend using a mixture of 60%
PARAFLUUP and 40% demineralised
water.
48)
135)
WINDSCREEN/REAR
WINDOW WASHING
FLUID
To top up, remove the cap (D) fig. 204
- fig. 205 - fig. 206 - fig. 207 - fig. 208
- fig. 209 - fig. 210 - fig. 211 - fig. 212,
by manoeuvring the tab.
Use a mixture of water and PETRONAS
DURANCE SC35 fluid, in the following
concentrations:
30% PETRONAS DURANCE SC 35
and 70% water in summer.
50% PETRONAS DURANCE SC 35
and 50% water in winter.
At temperatures below -20°C, use
undiluted PETRONAS DURANCE SC
35 fluid.
Check fluid level through the reservoir.
Close cap the (D) by pressing on the
central section.
136)
BRAKE FLUID
Unscrew the cap (E) fig. 204 - fig. 205 -
fig. 206 - fig. 207 - fig. 208 - fig. 209 -
fig. 210 - fig. 211 - fig. 212: and check
that the fluid in the reservoir is at the
maximum level.
The fluid level in the reservoir must not
exceed the MAX mark.
Use the brake fluid shown in the "Fluids
and lubricants" table (see "Technical
Specifications").
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE
166
NOTE Carefully clean the cap of the
reservoir (E) and the surrounding
surface.
Take great care to ensure that
impurities do not enter the reservoir
when the cap is opened.
Always use a funnel with a built-in filter
with a mesh of 0.12 mm or less.
WARNING Brake fluid absorbs
moisture. For this reason, if the vehicle
is mainly used in areas with a high
degree of atmospheric humidity, the
fluid should be replaced at more
frequent intervals than specified in the
“Scheduled Servicing Plan”.
49)
137) 138)
POWER STEERING FLUID
Check that the fluid level, with the
vehicle level and engine cold, is
between the MIN and MAX marks on
the body of the reservoir (G) fig. 204 -
fig. 205 - fig. 206 - fig. 207 - fig. 208 -
fig. 209 - fig. 210 - fig. 211 - fig. 212.
The level may exceed the MAX mark
when the oil is hot.
If topping up is required, make sure the
oil you use has the same specifications
as that already in the system.
139)
5)
50)
COMFORT-MATIC
AND DUALOGIC™
TRANSMISSION
HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
FLUID
To check the transmission oil level and
to check/change the clutch hydraulic
system fluid, go to a Fiat Dealership.
6)
WARNING
134)
Be very careful working in the engine
compartment when the engine is hot: you
may get burned. Remember that the fan
may start up if the engine is hot: this could
injure you. Scarves, ties and other loose
clothing might be pulled by moving parts.
135)
The cooling system is pressurised.
If necessary, only replace the plug with
another original or the operation of the
system may be adversely affected. Do not
remove the reservoir plug when the engine
is hot: you risk scalding yourself.
136)
Do not travel with the windscreen
washer fluid reservoir empty: the
windscreen washer is essential for
improving visibility. Some commercial
windscreen washer additives are
flammable. The engine compartment
contains hot components which may set it
on fire.
137)
Brake fluid is poisonous and highly
corrosive. In the event of accidental
contact, immediately wash the affected
parts with water and mild soap. Then rinse
thoroughly. Call a doctor immediately if
swallowed.
138)
The symbol
, on the brake fluid
container indicates if a brake fluid is
synthetic or mineralbased. Use of mineral
type fluids will damage the special rubber
seals of the braking system beyond repair.
139)
Prevent power steering fluid from
coming into contact with hot engine parts:
it is flammable.
IMPORTANT
47)
Do not add oil with specifications other
than those of the oil already existing in the
engine.
48)
PARAFLUUP anti-freeze is used in the
engine cooling system. Use the same fluid
as in the cooling system when topping
up. PARAFLUUP cannot be mixed with
any other type of fluid. If this occurs, do
not start the engine and contact your Fiat
Dealership immediately.
49)
Prevent brake fluid, which is highly
corrosive, from coming into contact
with painted parts. Should it happen,
immediately wash with water.
50)
Do not press on the power steering
end of travel with engine on for more than
8 consecutive seconds, since noise is
produced and there is a risk of system
damages.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
167
IMPORTANT
4)
Used engine oil and oil filters contain
substances which are harmful to the
environment. Contact a Fiat Dealership to
have the oil and filters changed. They are
equipped to dispose of the used oil and
filters respecting nature and the law.
5)
Power steering fluid consumption is
extremely low; if another top-up is required
after only a short period of time, have
the system checked for leaks at a Fiat
Dealership.
6)
Used transmission fluid contains
substances that are harmful to the
environment. It is advisable to have the oil
changed by a Fiat Dealership where it will
be disposed of respecting the environment
and according to legal requirements.
RECHARGING THE
BATTERY
WARNING The battery recharging
procedure is given as information only.
This operation should be performed at
a Fiat Dealership.
WARNING Charging should be slow at
a low ampere rating for approximately
24 hours. Charging for a longer time
may damage the battery.
WARNING If a "quick-type" battery
charger is used with the battery
fitted on the car, before connecting it
disconnect both cables of the battery
itself. Do not use a "quick-type" battery
charger to provide the starting voltage.
To recharge, proceed as follows:

WARNING
140)
Battery fluid is poisonous and
corrosive: avoid contact with your skin and
eyes. The battery should be charged in a
well ventilated place, away from naked
flames or possible sources of sparks:
danger of explosion and fire.
141)
Do not attempt to charge a frozen
battery: it must be thawed first, otherwise
it may explode. If freezing has occurred,
the battery should be checked by skilled
personnel to make sure that the internal
elements are not damaged and that the
body is not cracked, with the risk of leaking
poisonous and corrosive acid.

WARNING
142)
Driving with worn windscreen wiper
blades is a serious hazard, because
visibility is reduced in bad weather
conditions.
WHEELS AND TYRES
For the type of wheel rims and tyres
fitted on the vehicle see the "Wheels"
paragraph in the "Technical data"
chapter.
SNOW CHAINS
The use of snow chains should be
in compliance with local regulations.
Snow chains can be fitted to the tyres
of the front wheels (drive wheels) only.
Check the tension of the snow chains
after the first few metres have been
driven.
IMPORTANT NOTES
As far as possible, avoid sharp
braking, screech starts and violent
shocks against pavements, potholes or
other hard obstacles.
Driving for long stretches over uneven
roads can damage the tyres;
periodically check that the tyres have
no cuts in the side wall, abnormal
swelling or irregular tyre tread wear. Go
to a Fiat Dealership if required;
avoid overloading the car when
travelling: this may cause serious
damage to the wheels and tyres;
if a tyre is punctured, stop
immediately and replace it to
avoid damage to the tyre, the rim,
suspension and steering system;
tyres age even if they are not used
much. Cracks in the tread and on
the sidewalls are a sign of ageing. In
any event, have the tyres checked by
specialised technicians if they have
been fitted for longer than 6 years.
Remember to check the spare wheel
very carefully;
in the case of replacement, always fit
new tyres, avoiding those of unknown
origin;
if a tyre is changed, also change the
inflation valve;
to allow even wear between the front
and rear tyres, it is advisable to change
them over every 10–15 thousand
kilometres, keeping them on the same
side of the vehicle so as not to reverse
the direction of rotation.
143) 144) 145) 146) 147)
WARNING
143)
Remember that the road holding
qualities of your vehicle also depend on
the correct inflation pressure of the tyres.
144)
If tyre pressure is too low, the tyre
may overheat and be severely damaged as
a result.
145)
Do not switch tyres from the
righthand side of the vehicle to the
lefthand side, and vice versa.
