Section Four. Troubleshooting Information and Program

Self diagnosis
EBCM carries out a self diagnosis of the
system and is capable of detecting and
isolating system troubles. Once it detects
any trouble, it will designate a
troubleshooting code for the trouble
detected and turn on the ABS alarm
lamp. It will also disable the ABS
function during a particular ignition
cycle if necessary.
One. Displaying troubleshooting code
EBCM displays the troubleshooting code
with scanning tools.
Two. Clearing troubleshooting code
Two methods are adopted to clear the
EBCM troubleshooting codes:
1. Scanning tool method
2. Ignition cycle default
Whichever method is adopted, it shall be
confirmed if the system operates
normally and if the troubleshooting
codes appear again after the clearing
steps have been carried out.

The troubleshooting code shall not be
cleared by unplugging the EBCM,
detaching the battery cable or turning off
the ignition switch (except that the
trouble does not appear and in the case
of default setup after 100 times of
ignition).
Interrupted trouble or bad contact
Interrupted troubles are mostly caused
by the following:
Wrong electric wiring
Wrong electric connection
Stuck relay or solenoid valve
In the case of locating or repairing
interrupted troubles, please refer to the
sections on electric troubleshooting
procedure in the complete maintenance
manual.

Initializing sequence
The EBCM will carry out an initializing
test at the startup of each ignition cycle.
The initializing sequence is: relay,

solenoid valve and pump motor, which
takes about 1.5 seconds for each item to
check whether the operation is normal. If
any trouble is detected, the EBMC will
designate corresponding troubleshooting
codes. The initializing can be heard and
felt and is part of the normal system
operation.
Turn on the ignition switch with the key.
When the car speed reaches 3km/h, the
EBCM will start initializing the system.
When the EBCM does not discover any
braking switch at a driving speed of
3km/h (foot is off the brake pedal), the
initializing will be started. If the EBCM
discovers any braking switch at a driving
speed of 3km/h (foot is on the brake
pedal), the initializing will not be started
until the braking switch is not seen (foot
is off the brake pedal) or the car speed

reaches 16km/h. The interruption of
initializing is adopted considering that
the feedback on brake pedal at car
startup may not fully comply with the
feedback on brake pedal after the car
starts traveling.

Section Five. Troubleshooting of ABS

One. Failure to communicate with EBCM

1. Description of circuit
The EBCM transmits and receives serial
data through the EBCM. EBCM receives
the constant battery voltage through
Terminal A and B and transforms the
ignition voltage through Terminal A11.
The grounding terminal of EBCM is
Terminal C.
2. Assistance to troubleshooting

The typical causes of the failure to
communicate with EBCM include:
Bad contact of EBCM
Terminal C of EBCM is not grounded
There is no voltage on EBCM A and B
There is no ignition voltage on EBCM
Terminal A11
Data circuit is open/grounded
Data circuit has excessive resistance
