Acura RL (1996-2004 year). Manual — part 596
Climate Control Unit
No heater and A/C in either man-
ual or AUTO modes.
Check the No. 3 (7.5 A) fuse in the
under-dash fuse/relay box, and
the No. 56 (7.5 A) fuse in the
under-hood fuse/relay box.
Are the fuses OK?
Check for an open in the wire:
1. Remove the climate control
), and dis-
connect the 8P and 20P con-
nectors.
2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
3. Measure the voltage between
the No. 1 terminal of the 8P
connector and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
Check for a short in the wire:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Check for continuity between
the No. 3 terminal of the cli-
mate control unit 8P connec-
tor and body ground.
Is there continuity?
Check for an open in the wire:
Check for continuity between the
No. 7 terminal of the climate con-
trol unit 8P connector and body
ground.
Is there continuity?
Check for loose wires or poor
connections at the climate con-
trol unit 8P connector. If the con-
nections are good, substitute a
known-good climate control unit,
and recheck. If the symptom/indi-
cation goes away, replace the
original climate control unit.
Replace the fuse(s), and recheck.
CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT 8P CONNECTOR
Repair open in the wire between
the No. 3 fuse and the climate
control unit.
Wire side of female terminals
Repair short in the wire between
the climate control unit, the air
mix control motor and the mode
control motor.
Check for an open in the wire
between the climate control unit
and body ground. If the wire is
OK, check for poor ground at
G401 and G402.

Radiator Fan Control Sensor Circuit Open
Is there continuity?
Check for an open in the wire:
Check for continuity between the
No. 1 terminal of the radiator fan
control sensor 2P connector and
the No. 6 terminal of the fan con-
trol unit 12P connector.
Is there continuity?
Test the radiator fan control sensor
(see Fan Controls in section 10).
Is the sensor OK?
Check for loose wires or poor
connections at the fan control
unit 12P connector. If the con-
nections are good, substitute a
known-good fan control unit,
and recheck. If the symptom/
indication goes away, replace
original fan control unit.

Repair open in the wire between
the radiator fan control sensor
and the fan control unit.
Replace the radiator fan control
sensor.
Both fans do not run for engine
cooling (but they both run with
the A/C on).
Check for an open in the wire:
1. Disconnect the radiator fan
control sensor 2P connector
and the fan control unit 12P
connector.
2. Check for continuity between
the No. 2 terminal of the 2P
connector and the No. 12 ter-
minal of the 12P connector.

Radiator Fan Control Sensor Circuit Short
NOTE: It is normal for both fans to run at high speed when the system pressure is
above 1,520 kPa (15.5 kgf/cm
2
, 220 psi), or when the engine coolant temperature is
above 194°F (90°C).

sensor.
Check for loose wires or poor con-
nections at the fan control unit
12P connector. If the connections
are good, substitute a known-
good fan control unit, and

Check for an short in the wire:
1. Disconnect the radiator fan
control sensor 2P connector
and the fan control unit 12P
connector.
2. Check for continuity between
the No. 2 terminal of the radi-
ator fan control sensor 2P
connector and body ground.
Both fans always run at high
speed for engine cooling.

Is there continuity?
Check for an open in the wire:
Check for continuity between the
No. 3 terminal of the A/C pres-
sure switch 4P connector and
body ground.
Is there continuity?
Check for an open in the wire:
1. Disconnect the fan control unit
12P connector.
2. Check for continuity between
the No. 2 terminal of the A/C
pressure switch 4P connector
and No. 1 terminal of the fan
control unit 12P connector.
Is there continuity ?
Check for loose wires or poor con-
nections at the fan control unit
12P connector. If the connections
are good, substitute a known-
good fan control unit, and
