INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - STEERING
COLUMN INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
The steering column intermediate shaft and its
flexible universal joints must be inspected whenever
any of the following conditions exist.
• After the vehicle has been involved in a collision
which deploys the airbag, regardless of the extent of
damage to the vehicle.
• After the vehicle has been involved in an under-
carriage impact which results in any type of damage
or bending of front suspension components or the
frame of the vehicle.
• Under any conditions which result in the steer-
ing gear, steering column or steering column shaft
receiving a force great enough to move the steering
column or shaft forward or rearward in the vehicle.
Inspect the intermediate shaft and its flexible
joints for any of the following conditions:
• Seized or binding bearings
• Loose bearing stakes
• Bearings not fully seated
• Shaft bent
Upon inspection, if any of the above conditions
exist, replacement of the entire steering column
intermediate shaft is necessary.
REMOVAL
NOTE: Review all Warnings and Cautions. (Refer to
19 - STEERING - WARNING).
(1) Disconnect negative (-) cable from battery and
isolate cable.

(2) Secure steering wheel in STRAIGHT-AHEAD
position using a steering wheel holder.
(3) Remove air cleaner housing. (Refer to 9 -

HOUSING - REMOVAL)
(4) Remove coupling pinch bolt securing intermedi-
ate shaft to steering gear (Fig. 19). If necessary, a
brass drift and hammer can be used to tap coupling
and intermediate shaft off steering gear shaft.
(5) Remove coupling pinch bolt securing intermedi-
ate shaft to intermediate shaft extension (Fig. 19).
(6) Slide intermediate shaft off extension and
remove from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
(1) Install intermediate shaft using reverse of
removal procedure.
(2) Slide intermediate shaft coupling onto interme-
diate shaft extension until hole is lined up for pinch
bolt installation (Fig. 19).
(3) Install coupling pinch bolt at extension and
tighten to 49 N·m (36 ft. lbs.) torque.
(4) Align intermediate shaft with steering gear
shaft. Slide intermediate shaft coupling onto steering
gear shaft until bolt hole is properly aligned (Fig.
19). It may be necessary to use a soft (brass) drift
and hammer to tap the coupling into place.
(5) Install coupling pinch bolt at steering gear
shaft. Tighten pinch bolt to 49 N·m (36 ft. lbs.)
torque.
(6) Install air cleaner housing. (Refer to 9 -

(7) Remove steering wheel holder.
(8) Connect battery (-) negative cable to battery
negative post.

REMOVAL
NOTE: Review all Warnings and Cautions. (Refer to
19 - STEERING - WARNING).
(1) Disconnect negative (-) cable from battery and
isolate cable.
(2) Secure steering wheel in STRAIGHT-AHEAD
position using a steering wheel holder.
(3) Remove coupling pinch bolt securing intermedi-
ate shaft to intermediate shaft extension (Fig. 19).
(4) Slide intermediate shaft off extension.
(5) Loosen one of the bolts securing extension
bearing in place (Fig. 20). This must be done to
allow adequate movement in bearing when
removing
or
installing
intermediate
shaft
extension.
(6) Remove coupling pinch bolt securing intermedi-
ate shaft extension to steering column shaft (Fig. 20).
(7) Slide extension off column shaft, then slide
extension out of bearing and remove from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
(1) Slide intermediate shaft extension into bearing
mounted to dash (Fig. 20).
(2) Align opposite end of extension with steering
column shaft. Slide extension coupling onto steering
column shaft until hole is lined up for pinch bolt
installation.
(3) Install coupling pinch bolt at steering column
shaft and tighten to 49 N·m (36 ft. lbs.) torque.
(4) Tighten previously loosened extension bearing
mounting bolt to 17 N·m (150 in. lbs.) torque. (Fig.
20).
(5) Align intermediate shaft with intermediate
shaft extension and slide intermediate shaft coupling
onto extension until hole is lined up for pinch bolt
installation (Fig. 19).
(6) Install coupling pinch bolt at extension and
tighten to 49 N·m (36 ft. lbs.) torque.

STEERING WHEEL
REMOVAL
NOTE: Before proceeding, review Warnings and
Cautions. (Refer to 19 - STEERING/COLUMN -
WARNING).
WARNING: WHEN AN UNDEPLOYED AIRBAG MOD-
ULE IS TO BE REMOVED FROM THE STEERING
WHEEL,
FIRST
DISCONNECT
THE
BATTERY
GROUND CABLE AND ISOLATE IT. ALLOW THE
SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE FOR A MINI-
MUM OF TWO MINUTES, THEN BEGIN THE AIRBAG
REMOVAL.
(1) Disconnect negative (-) cable from battery and
isolate it.
(2) Remove three screws securing driver airbag to
steering wheel (Fig. 21).
(3) Tip driver airbag outward, then disconnect two
squib wiring connectors and horn wiring connector.
Remove driver airbag.
(4) Remove squib wiring routing clips from steer-
ing wheel (Fig. 21).
(5) Place front wheels of vehicle in STRAIGHT-
AHEAD position.
(6) Remove ignition key from ignition key cylinder.
(7) Holding steering wheel firmly in place, remove
steering wheel retaining bolt from steering column
shaft in center of steering wheel (Fig. 22).
CAUTION: When installing a wheel puller on the
steering wheel, be sure the puller bolts are fully
seated in the threaded holes on the steering wheel.
If the bolts are not fully seated in the threaded
holes, the threads may be stripped out of the steer-
ing wheel when attempting to remove the steering
wheel. Take care not to over-thread the puller bolts
such that they contact the clockspring possibly
damaging it.
Also, threading the retaining bolt back in the end of
the shaft until approximately 13 mm (0.5 in.) of
thread is showing between the wheel and the head
of the bolt allows a safe reaction surface for the
puller to work against.
(8) Thread wheel retaining bolt back into end of
steering shaft until approximately 13 mm (0.5 in.) of
thread is showing between wheel and head of bolt.
(9) Install steering wheel puller on steering wheel.
CAUTION: Do not bump or hammer on steering
wheel or steering column shaft when removing
steering wheel from steering column.
(10) While
holding
steering
wheel
firmly
in
STRAIGHT-AHEAD position, remove steering wheel
