TRANSMITTER
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - REMOTE KEYLESS
ENTRY TRANSMITTER
Using special tool 9001, first test to ensure that
the transmitter is functioning. Typical testing dis-
tance is 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) for Asian transmit-
ters and 30.5 centimeters (12 inches) for all others.
To test, position the transmitter as shown (Fig. 3).
Press any transmitter button, then test each button
individually. The tool will beep if a radio signal
strength that lights five or more LED’s is detected.
Repeat this test three times. If transmitter fails any
of the test, refer to the Diagnostic Procedures man-
ual.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - RKE TRANSMITTER
BATTERIES
NOTE: Do not disturb the metal terminal near the
batteries. Avoid touching the new batteries. Skin
oils may cause battery deterioration. If batteries are
touched, clean with rubbing alcohol.
The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter case
snaps open and shut for battery access. To replace
the RKE transmitter batteries:
(1) Using a thin coin, gently pry at the notch in
the center seam of the RKE transmitter case halves
near the key ring until the two halves unsnap. Be
careful not to damage the rubber gasket when sepa-
rating the case halves.
(2) Lift the back half of the transmitter case off of
the RKE transmitter.
(3) Remove the two batteries from the RKE trans-
mitter.
(4) Replace the two batteries with new 3V Pana-
sonic CR2032 or equivalent. Install the batteries with
the positive terminal up. Reference the “+ SIDE UP”
on the inside of the bottom half of the transmitter
case.
(5) Align the two RKE transmitter case halves
with each other, and squeeze them firmly and evenly
together until they snap back into place. Test trans-
mitter operation.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - RKE TRANSMITTER
PROGRAMING
New Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitters can
be programed using the DRB III
t scan tool and the
proper Diagnostic procedures manual if no function-
ing transmitter is available.
With the DRB III
t select BODY, BODY COM-
PUTER, MISCELLANEOUS, then PROGRAM RKE.
Follow instructions on the screen.
The following procedure can be used as long as one
functioning transmitter is available:
(1) Using a functional key fob transmitter, unlock
the vehicle and disarm the Vehicle Theft Security
System.
(2) Insert ignition key into the ignition switch.
(3) Turn the ignition switch to RUN position with-
out starting engine.
(4) Using a functional key fob transmitter, press
and hold the UNLOCK button for a minimum five
seconds (maximum ten seconds).
(5) While
still
holding
UNLOCK
button,
and
before ten seconds passes, press the PANIC button
and release both at the same time. A single chime
will sound to indicate that the transmitter program-
ming mode has been entered (allow 3 seconds for
chime to sound).
(6) Within 30 seconds of the chime, press and
release the “LOCK” and “UNLOCK” buttons on the
transmitter at the same time. Then press and release
any button on the same transmitter and a chime will
sound after successfully programming the transmit-
ter.
(7) Repeat steps 5 and 6 for all transmitters that
will be used with this vehicle (up to 4 total).
(8) Turn ignition to the OFF position. Transmitter
programming mode will discontinue after 60 seconds.
All transmitter programming must be com-
pleted within time specified.
STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSMITTER
SYNCHRONIZATION
The following conditions can cause a transmitter
and module to be out of synchronization:
• Depressing a transmitter button while discon-
necting the vehicle battery or power to the Body Con-
trol Module (BCM)
• Pressing both transmitter for five seconds or
longer when out of range of the vehicle
• Pressing the transmitter button more than 255
times when out of range of the vehicle
• Disassembling the transmitter, followed by reas-
sembling it and pressing the transmitter buttons
more than 10 times when out of range of the vehicle.
The transmitter and module can be synchronized
by holding both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons
down for a period of 5 to 10 seconds. The module will
acknowledge a successful synchronization by com-
manding a horn chirp. Normal transmitter function
will return.
SPECIFICATIONS - REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY

RANGE
Normal operation range is up to a distance of 3 to
7 meters (10 to 23 ft.) of the vehicle. Range may be
better or worse depending on the environment
around the vehicle.

POWER MIRRORS
DESCRIPTION
The power operated outside rear view mirrors
allow the driver to adjust both outside mirrors elec-
trically from the driver seat position by operating a
switch on the driver side door panel.
OPERATION
The power mirrors receive a non-switched battery
feed through a fuse in the fuse block so that the sys-
tem will remain operational, regardless of the igni-
tion switch position.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - POWER MIRRORS
Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The
wiring information includes wiring diagrams, proper
wire and connector repair procedures, details of wire
harness routing and retention, connector pin-out
information and location views for the various wire
harness connectors, splices and grounds.
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable.
(2) Remove the power mirror switch (Refer to 8 -
ELECTRICAL/POWER MIRRORS/POWER MIRROR
SWITCH - REMOVAL).
(3) Disconnect wire connector from the switch.
(4) Use two fused jumper wires, one connected to a
12 volt battery source, and the other connected to a
good body ground. Refer to the Mirror Motor Test
table for appropriate mirror response, using the mir-
ror switch wiring harness connector.
(5) If test results are not obtained as shown in the
Mirror Motor Test table, check for open or shorted
circuit, or replace mirror assembly as necessary.
If mirror motor tests OK, (Refer to 8 - ELECTRI-
CAL/POWER MIRRORS/POWER MIRROR SWITCH
- DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
